Self-Tapping Inconsistency
The Issue:
Self-tapping can be a useful BLS technique for therapists to use with clients in some circumstances. However, it can often prove to be challenging for clients to maintain a consistent and precise rhythm, potentially impacting the effectiveness of the bilateral stimulation. It can also be a potential cause of fatigue and distraction.

The Issue:
Other online EMDR solutions suggest that you use screensharing to show your client an onscreen light bar. This is definitely not recommended. Screensharing is designed for static content at a low frame rate, not fast-moving visual BLS. The result therefore is usually jerky and low quality for your client.
Our Solution:
Bilateral Base takes a different approach. Instead of relying on the low quality and frame rate of screensharing our virtual light bar is generated directly on your client’s screen which results in much smoother BLS movement and a higher resolution image.
Eye Movement Cropping & Lag
The Issue:
We have a number of therapists using Bilateral Base who were previously moving their finger back and forth in front of their webcam. Video calls operate at about 15 frames per second, which is too low for fast-moving visual BLS. Therapists also struggle to know how far they can move their hand without going past the screen edge.
Our Solution:
Visual BLS on Bilateral Base is not done by showing a video image, instead the platform sends instructions to the clients device which then animates the visual BLS on their screen. This results in high quality smooth movement even on a slow or patchy internet connection.
Complicated Multi-Window Setups
The Issue:
Most EMDR solutions require the use of separate programs for video conferencing and BLS tools. Both therapist and client then must set up multiple windows on their computer during a session, this is fiddly and time-consuming. It also limits working with clients who want to use a tablet or phone to join sessions.

No, there’s no software to install. The platform works on any modern PC or Mac with a web browser like Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
If you or your client are using an iPad or iPhone then the Safari/Chrome browsers should be used.
If you or your client are using an Android device then the Chrome browser should be used.

- Video call encryption – Our video calls use end-to-end 256 bit encryption directly between the two participants’ computers, so no one can break into or watch a conference happening. For the technically minded, the technology we use is WebRTC. This is an industry standard for telehealth.
- Secure Session Links – The reusable invitation links that are sent to clients, contain a unique and complex key to keep them secure
- Server, Database & Account Security – Our servers and databases are also encrypted. Each account is protected and requires complex password and unique password. Multi-factor authentication is also available.
