Voices Fading In and Out

Why Does Voice Sound Sometimes Fade In and Out During Sessions?
Understanding Noise Cancelling in Bilateral Base and How to Adjust It if Needed

At Bilateral Base, we use built-in noise cancelling technology to provide the clearest possible audio during your sessions. This feature is designed to reduce background noise—like typing, rustling, or ambient sounds—so that you and your client can hear each other more clearly and with less distraction.

Why Is Noise Cancelling On by Default? #

For the vast majority of sessions, noise cancelling improves the call experience by:

  • Reducing background interference

  • Making voices sound clearer and more focused

  • Minimising distractions for both participants

Because of this, we recommend keeping noise cancelling switched on in most circumstances.

Why Does My Sound Sometimes Fade? #

Occasionally, noise cancelling may mistakenly identify your voice (or parts of it)—especially if it’s soft, distant, or has a background hum—as background noise. When this happens, your audio may seem to fade in and out, or parts of your speech may be unintentionally suppressed.

If the other participant lets you know that your voice is fading in and out then try disabling noise cancelling to address the issue.

How to Turn Off Noise Cancelling in Bilateral Base #

  1. Join a session as usual.

  2. Click on the settings icon (gear symbol) in the lower right corner of the video window.

  3. Go to the Audio tab.

  4. Find the option for Noise Cancelling.

  5. Toggle it off.

  6. Close the settings panel—your new settings will take effect immediately.

  7. Ask the other participant(s) if it has improved the sound of your voice for them.

You can switch this back on at any time using the same steps.

Remember that turning noise cancelling on or off only affects how others hear your voice—it does not affect how you hear them. So, if you are hearing a voice that fades in and out (e.g. from a client), the issue is likely on their end. In this case, you should ask them to try turning off noise cancelling in their own settings.
